Cross-validation and Bootstrap for Optimizing the Number of Units of Competitive Associative Nets
Cross-validation and bootstrap, or resampling methods in general, are examined for applying them to optimizing the number of units of competitive associative nets called CAN2. There are a number of resampling methods available, but the performance depends on the neural network to be applied and functions to be learned. So, we apply several resampling methods to the CAN2 which has been shown eff...
متن کاملIdeal bootstrap estimation of expected prediction error for k-nearest neighbor classifiers: Applications for classification and error assessment
Euclidean distance -nearest neighbor ( -NN) classifiers are simple nonparametric classification rules. 5 5 Bootstrap methods, widely used for estimating the expected prediction error of classification rules, are motivated by the objective of calculating the ideal bootstrap estimate of expected prediction error. In practice, bootstrap methods use Monte Carlo resampling to estimate the ideal boot...
متن کاملEfficient Bootstrap Resampling
Bootstrap principle is briefly reviewed. Hall’s (1989) antithetic variates method for bootstrap is discussed and extended to more than two antithetic resampling processes. We illustrate the theory with a simulation study. The numerical results show that increasing the number of antithetic resampling processes produces significant smaller variances of the bootstrap estimator over the paired case.
متن کاملHybrid Resampling Methods for Confidence Intervals
This paper considers the problem of constructing confidence intervals for a single parameter θ in a multiparameter or nonparametric family. Hybrid resampling methods, which “hybridize” the essential features of bootstrap and exact methods, are proposed and developed for both parametric and nonparametric situations. In particular, we apply such methods to construct confidence regions, whose cove...
متن کاملA Short Prehistory of the Bootstrap
The contemporary development of bootstrap methods, from the time of Efron’s early articles to the present day, is well documented and widely appreciated. Likewise, the relationship of bootstrap techniques to certain early work on permutation testing, the jackknife and cross-validation is well understood. Less known, however, are the connections of the bootstrap to research on survey sampling fo...
